The Foundation’s VISIONS2018 Conference — June 21–23 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina — will feature retinal
science’s leading researchers and clinicians and
focus on the year’s top science news and emerging
Based on a survey of VISIONS past attendees
that asked what attendees wanted to learn and see
at the 2018 conference, new features have been
added to the meeting. Two important elements,
however, have been maintained — the latest
science and the opportunity for attendees to hear
from and talk to the researchers and clinicians
about their particular diagnosis.
The conference will include a special session —
Mission Possible! The Year’s Top Advances and
What’s Next in Retinal Disease Science. Session
speakers include: Daniel Chung, MD, PhD, of
Spark Therapeutics talking about LUXTURNA,
the first gene therapy for the eye; Halden Conner,
CEO and president of Nacuity Pharmaceuticals
discussing the search for pan-therapies;
Foundation Fighting Blindness CEO Ben Yerxa,
PhD, speaking on how science and industry
team to create cures; and the Foundation’s chief
research officer, Stephen Rose, PhD, reporting on
FFB’s groundwork for the next breakthrough.
Additional science-focused programming will
cover issues of importance to all retinal disease
patients, including genetic testing and patient
registries and how to know if a clinical trial is
right for you.
Saturday programming will include disease-specific clinical updates and sessions on adapting
and thriving, including presentations on adapted
running, cooking with low or no vision, ensuring
academic success for low or no vision students,
self-care, and how to support a loved-one with an
inherited retinal disease.
Scientist and biotech executive Emmett
Cunningham will be the featured Closing Session
speaker, delivering an address titled Developing
Retinal Therapies — A Personal, Science, and
New for this Year! The Conference Exhibit Hall
will be expanded and will, for the first time,
feature product and technology demonstrations.
A visit to the hall will be your opportunity to
learn about and try new assistive technology tools.
New Excursions! Exciting add-on events will be
open to all attendees and require separate tickets.
