1971 A few families establish the Foundation Fighting Blindness,
which begins funding the work of retinal-research
1989 The first retinal-disease-causing ene is discovered. Today, more
than 200 have been identified.
The discovery that
Vitamin A palmitate
of vision loss in
2000 A gene therapy restores vision in dogs blinded by a disease called
Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA).
2006 Researchers turn stem cells into retinal cells. Also, the FDA approves
Lucentis®, a drug used to halt vision loss in people
affected by age-related macular degeneration
(AMD). It was created using an anti-growth-factor
molecule whose discovery was facilitated by the
2007 Induced pluripotent stem cells, derived from a patient’s skin, are
used to create retinal cells.
